Types of Turnstiles and Barriers: A Detailed Comparison

Tripod Turnstiles

The tripod turnstile is the most widely deployed pedestrian control device globally, with a three-arm rotating mechanism that permits one person to pass per credential presentation. Tripod turnstiles are cost-effective (typically 30–50% less expensive than flap barriers), mechanically robust with MTBF ratings exceeding 5 million cycles, and suitable for high-throughput environments where a throughput rate of 25–35 persons per minute is adequate. Flap barriers (also called wing barriers or paddle barriers) are the preferred choice for corporate lobbies, financial institutions, and any environment where aesthetics are a priority alongside security. Full-Height Turnstiles

Full-height turnstiles (also called security revolving doors or mantrap turnstiles) provide maximum resistance to unauthorised entry. The rotating 4-arm cage mechanism, typically 2,100–2,300mm tall, permits only one person to pass per credential cycle, with no possibility of jumping over or ducking under the barrier. Full-height turnstiles are the standard for nuclear facilities, data centres, server rooms, prison facilities, and other environments classified as critical security perimeters where a determined adversary must be physically prevented from entry regardless of social engineering attempts. Swing barriers operate on a single panel that rotates 90° to open, providing a wide (900–1,200mm) passage without the mechanical complexity of flap barriers. They are commonly deployed at the end of a tripod turnstile or flap barrier lane row to provide an accessible passage for wheelchair users, pram users, security staff escorting visitors, and deliveries. Fire Safety Compliance and Emergency Operation

On receipt of a dry contact signal from the fire alarm panel, all barriers simultaneously open to free-passage mode, clearing egress routes within seconds. Fail-safe operation is achieved through UPS battery backup maintaining barrier power for 30–60 minutes following main power failure. In fail-open mode (the default for most commercial buildings), barriers unlock on power loss, ensuring emergency egress is never compromised.
